National Gallery Prague

The history of the NGP collection, however, reaches back to the early 17th century, when Albrecht Dürer's legendary Feast of the Rosary became part of Rudolf II's art collection in 1606. As one of the few works to do so, this famous painting has remained in Prague to this day and ranks among the cornerstone pieces of the gallery's collections. In the second half of that same century, the collecting activity of the Czech nobility began to flourish in earnest, and thanks to it — once the Picture Gallery was founded — the wider public could admire these masterpieces for the first time. It was then that the foundations of today's National Gallery Prague were laid.
