Jan Černý. FLOW STATE

Flow State is the viral slogan of 2025. It signifies an absorption in something that engrosses you so much that you cease to perceive the world around you or the passage of time. This is precisely how fashion designer Jan Černý (born 1993 in Hodonín), recipient of the Grand Designer title at the Czech Grand Design Awards for 2024, creates. He is presenting his first solo exhibition in Brno. His name is most often associated with the Olympic collection for Paris 2024, with uniforms for the staff of the Czech pavilion at Expo 2025 in Osaka, with the green glass dress worn by actress Aňa Geislerová at the 59th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, but above all with his own brand JAN SOCIÉTÉ.

A hallmark of Jan Černý's work is the recognizable silhouettes and bold details of his menswear and genderless collections, inspired by fine art – for example, his signature Rorschach test print, to which he was led by Vladimír Boudník's artistic interpretation of imprints – or by uniforms, workwear, or streetwear. All these layers are connected by a respect for tradition, haute couture, and an innovative perspective on menswear.

Jan Černý's approach to fashion is democratic; he successfully connects street fashion and high fashion. In addition to creating his own unique collections, presented at spectacularly conceived shows, he collaborates with the Czech work shoe manufacturer Prestige. While still a fashion student in Zlín in 2015, he chose this Czech sneaker as his subject. He designed an individual edition of it, which was appreciated by the former artistic director of Louis Vuitton, Virgil Abloh, one of the most progressive fashion designers of the first quarter of the 21st century, under whose mentorship Jan Černý completed an internship in Paris. This also prompted the creation of the Prestige Jan collection last year, which went into regular serial production.

Jan Černý creates under his own brand JAN SOCIÉTÉ. Its name suggests that it represents a specific brand concept based on a community that connects culture, art, and music. Community collaboration among young designers within the brand is also important to Jan Černý in the creative process. A constant member of the core team is the top tailor and fashion designer Boris Kráľ, who creates prototypes of each model, verifies technologies, and tests details.

Through his own brand, Jan Černý realizes his vision of fashion, which he perceives as an experience. Therefore, he often connects the wearers of his models and inspires them to interact through his own, exceptionally dramaturgically conceived social events. By creating such unique experiences, he builds a strong, multilayered community that enthusiastically follows his creative visions.

Thanks to the unpretentious and inventive reinterpretation of iconic garment types, such as the suit, shirt, or coat, Jan pushes the boundaries of the men's wardrobe across generations and brings style and quality tailoring back into young men's clothing. In this regard, his position and influence in the cultural and fashion milieu are unprecedented.

"I see myself as an experience designer. Through media such as clothing, light, sound, or scenography, I compose an overall emotion that is then transferred to the viewer or visitor. I am also thinking about the upcoming exhibition in the same way. It will be one big surprise," says Jan Černý.
