Letting Artifacts Speak –

the Riezinger-Hallstatt excavations

The archaeological site monitoring carried out by the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien in 1990/1991 and 2025 on the “Riezinger” property in Hallstatt documents an almost continuous use of the area from the Early Neolithic to modern times.

Among the most significant findings is an early Neolithic utility and work area of the Linear Pottery culture (approx. 5300–5000 BC), which is evidenced by extensive finds. Further horizons of use include Iron Age layers with indications of deposits or relocated burials, Roman findings with fire and work areas, and medieval terracing walls that significantly shaped the later terrain structure.

The results illustrate the complex stratigraphic development of the investigated area and provide new insights into the oldest settlement phases in the Hallstatt region.

The special exhibition can be visited from April 18, 2026, to December 2027.
