Uwe Bressnik. SHIFTING LINES. Grooves. Grids. Rhythms
About the exhibition
· Show originalUwe Bressnik's art moves at the intersections where familiar media cross their classical boundaries. For decades, the artist, born in 1961 in Villach and living in Vienna, has been shaping a transmedial oeuvre that combines painting, graphic art, image object, sculpture and installation. His works draw on engagement with diverse cultural worlds such as music, new media and sport. They challenge conventional ways of seeing and invite us to read the grammar of perception anew. A central leitmotif in Bressnik's work is the transformation of sound into visible form. With numerous groups of works around the motif of the phonograph record, he proves himself a “record producer” in the figurative sense. He liberates the classical medium from its purely acoustic function and translates it into a free, often humorous object art. The discs, circles and grooves become autonomous forms that change their dimensions, bend, stack, line up and conquer space. The result is a fascinating audiography of the visual, art that the eye hears. In parallel, Bressnik's net and grid works explore the tension between analogue tradition and digital present, and address the change in visual perception brought about by digital image inventions. By precisely layering everyday gauze fabrics, he creates moiré effects that haptically simulate the flicker of modern screens. He transfers the achievements of Op Art and Constructivism into a current media discourse. This exhibition across seven rooms offers a comprehensive insight into an artistic cosmos sustained as much by conceptual rigor as by playful freedom and subtle wit. Bressnik shows that art is an open, resonant system in which it is essential to keep changing the track!
