Kitchen from the Kitchen – new exhibition at MIT!
From 27 March 2026 until the end of 2027.
The place I love most in the world is the kitchen – so wrote Banana Yoshimoto. At the Museum of Engineering and Technology in Kraków we share this passion, which is why we are happy to invite you to our exhibition devoted to the heart of every home.
The exhibition Kitchen from the Kitchen is a fascinating journey through the 20th century, showing how technical progress revolutionised the way we obtain, prepare, process and store food. The arrival of electricity and gas had an enormous impact on everyday life and culinary practices in Poland. We want to show the scale of change that took place in Polish homes – from manual labour to the precision of electric appliances.
The exhibition is divided into six parts that guide visitors through the whole process of change in the kitchen in the 20th century:
I. Obtaining food: we will trace how the supply of cities changed – from traditional market squares to modern supermarkets. We will also look at the problem of food adulteration, which, as it turns out, is not unique to our times.
II. Kitchen space: we will see the evolution of the room itself – from closed kitchens and large coal stoves, through the ergonomic “Frankfurt kitchen”, to “blind kitchens”.
III. Storage: we will discover the path from pantries and ice boxes, through gas appliances, to today’s electric refrigerators and industrial preservation methods such as freeze-drying and pasteurisation.
IV. Food preparation: here machines reign! We will see devices such as the iconic kitchen robot “Bartek” and the valuable electric cooker “Gródek”. Also mixers, juicers and yoghurt makers. We will show how the laws of physics and mechanics made everyday chopping, grinding and frying easier.
V. Hygiene and waste: we will explore the history of keeping things clean, from sand and ash, through the “Ludwik” cleaning fluid, to the first Polish dishwashers.
VI. And for dessert… come to the zone where we present coffee grinders, the “Kawex” coffee and tea maker, soda water siphons and home ice cream machines. The exhibition Kitchen from the Kitchen is a real treat for lovers of vintage design and technology from the People’s Republic of Poland era.
The display presents a wide range of appliances that for decades made everyday life easier in Polish homes and became icons of the past century. The exhibition features many objects, mostly from the MIT collections, as well as archival photographs, film materials and animations.
We invite you to explore together the secrets of technology that changed our everyday life forever!
