Exhibition at Kroměříž Castle

Permanent

The Olomouc Museum of Art has a detached workplace at the Archbishops' Castle in Kroměříž – the Archdiocesan Museum Kroměříž. Experts in old art organize short-term exhibitions here, manage the Picture Gallery, the Library, and permanent exhibitions: the Music Cabinet and the Coin and Medal Cabinet.

The Archbishops' Castle is open only during the tourist season from April to October and in exceptional cases, such as Advent. Before visiting, please check the castle's opening hours.

Music Cabinet III.

The arrival of the Piarist Order in Kroměříž (1687) and the creation of conditions for its functioning influenced not only the level of education in Moravia for many decades but also significantly and permanently changed the urban composition of the city. The Kroměříž college became for almost two centuries a center for music education of young fundatists, and the preserved collection of sheet music is evidence of the high theoretical and interpretative level of the students. Graduates often worked as music teachers in noble residences, active players, singers, cantors, and last but not least, composers.

Although a total of 282 musical scores have been preserved to this day, we can assume that the total number of sheet music material was many times higher. After the end of teaching and the departure of the last members of the order in 1879, the collection of musical instruments used by the students of the singing seminary also disappeared irrevocably.

The Kroměříž music archive is, without exaggeration, one of the most important in the world. The staff of the Olomouc Museum of Art, who care for the rich artistic archiepiscopal collections, are gradually trying to introduce visitors to all its treasures – this season, the exhibition is dedicated to the Piarist music collection. This is the third installation of the Music Cabinet, which is located on the second floor of the Archbishops' Castle Kroměříž as part of the Picture Gallery and Treasury tour route.

Coin and Medal Cabinet II.

Mintings of the Archbishops of Salzburg: the exhibition offers a look at the coinage of the Archbishops of Salzburg from the 12th to the end of the 18th century. In addition to common silver coins in the form of thalers, goldgulden, kreuzers or batzens, goldgulden, ducats and medals issued for various occasions are also on display. On some, one can observe, for example, the city from Kapuzinerberg, the newly built cathedral, processions with relics of the provincial patrons, or the interior of the local mint.

The exhibition is part of the NAKI III project (DH23P03OVV015): "Friedrich Cardinal von Fürstenberg – the Last Aristocrat on the Throne of the Archbishops of Olomouc," provided by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.
