In the cradle of British art: John Constable and the RA

Oct 12, 2026 – Feb 1, 2027

About the exhibition

John Constable took a long, winding path to acceptance at the Royal Academy. Despite studying at the RA Schools and submitting regularly to the Summer Exhibition for many years, the English artist was not elected to become a Royal Academician until 1829, aged 52. This display will show artworks and objects that tell the story of Constable’s faithful attitude to an institution he referred to as the “cradle of British art,” and to which as an Academician he devoted himself for the rest of his life.
