Oskar Kokoschka and Egon Schiele – Networkers and Rivals: In 2026, the Kokoschka Museum Pöchlarn focuses on two of the most outstanding artistic personalities of modernism. The drive for recognition and success of the two great Expressionists – a race at a distance – is as much a theme as the extensive network of art and culture. Alongside important exhibitions and the influential Akademischer Verband für Literatur und Musik in Wien, the show highlights leading collectors and patrons who also served both artists as publicist mouthpieces. The exhibition also turns its gaze to further artist colleagues and reveals both striking parallels and rivalries. Kokoschka attracted attention early on as a painter, graphic artist and dramatist on the exhibition and theatre stage. "Between Acclaim and Vilification" – a statement about his early work that also applied to many other artists.

A publication from Hirmer Verlag (April 2026) as well as the 4th volume in the series Kokoschka im Fokus will accompany the exhibition.
