Merlin James

Merlin James

Jun 11 – Aug 29, 2027

Merlin James’s work is profoundly shaped by the history of Western painting. Genres, motifs, and techniques are revived, shifted, and brought into new constellations, often with a subtle, almost mischievous lightness that counteracts any impression of monumentality. His paintings, predominantly in small formats, move between architecture, interior, figuration, and abstraction, yet always draw attention to the act of painting itself and to the material structures that enable it. Instead of starting from immediate observation or photographic templates, James activates impressions and memories accumulated over time, redesigning familiar spaces and presences through processes of remembrance.

Thin veils of paint, abrasion marks, perforations, and the incorporation of materials such as hair, ash, or sawdust disturb the coherence of the image and bring elements of studio work directly into the piece. Central to James’s work is a rethinking of the starting point of painting: stretchers and display frames are not neutral supports but actively contribute to meaning. In some paintings, the classical canvas is partially or entirely abandoned in favor of translucent materials. These are stretched over exposed wooden constructions, which have been partially worked and designed, so that image and construction become simultaneously visible. In this sense, James’s oeuvre unfolds as a concentrated engagement with the conditions of painting itself—its materials, its history, and its semantic and expressive possibilities.
