On the Trail of the Celts… An Archaeological Sensation Along the Baden Main Water Pipeline – Lecture by Prof. emer. Raimund Karl
À propos de l’exposition
A Celtic burial field, mysterious cemetery temples and the final resting place of a warrior – the University of Vienna's archaeological excavations near the source of the Fischa held a very special surprise in late summer 2026: the first Celtic chariot burial in Lower Austria!
In this extraordinary grave, a girl or a young woman found her final rest. Her bier was a two-wheeled chariot – a funerary custom previously unknown in Eastern Austria. Comparable graves are known mainly from Great Britain, Central France, the Benelux countries and the Moselle region.
Yet the chariot grave was by no means the only spectacular find: the remains of two Celtic cemetery temples, in which several graves were laid out, also offer fascinating insights into burial rituals and the world of the Celts.
The lecture will take you on an exciting journey into the Celtic past of the region. Learn which secrets the excavations have brought to light, what the extraordinary burials reveal about the people of that era, and discover some of the most impressive finds up close!
