Dana Lixenberg
À propos de l’exposition
Dutch photographer Dana Lixenberg (b. 1964) is considered one of the most significant contemporary portrait photographers today. For many years, she has followed people from the most varied social and cultural backgrounds with great sensitivity, creating pictures that challenge common stereotypes. This exhibition, the most comprehensive presentation of her oeuvre in Europe to date, brings together more than three decades of her work in the United States. The show focuses on her much-acclaimed landmark project Imperial Courts, 1993—ongoing, which documents the lives of the residents of a social housing development in Los Angeles. The exhibition is rounded off by portraits from her long-term project Jeffersonville, Indiana; her pictures of the Inuit community of Shishmaref, Alaska, which is threatened by climate change; and her iconic photographs of Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G. Providing a complex panorama of American society, these images speak of identity, social inequality, and the reality of the lives of her protagonists.
Organized by MEP—Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris, and Fundación Mapfre, Madrid. Presented in collaboration with C/O Berlin.
