Portrait Miniatures: 500 Years of Love and Loyalty
À propos de l’exposition
Discover the story of portrait miniatures in Britain, from their Tudor beginnings to the present day. This exhibition brings together over 80 outstanding miniatures from the Royal Collection, plus paintings, drawings, prints, books and photographs.
Small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, portrait miniatures were once treasured as personal keepsakes. In the 16th and 17th centuries, they were often worn close to the body and hidden from view. By the 19th century, they had become celebrated works of art displayed in public, including at the Royal Academy.
Through portraits of figures including Henry VIII, Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria, the exhibition explores how portrait miniatures were commissioned, worn, exchanged and contemplated. Featuring works by artists including Hans Holbein the Younger, Isaac Oliver, Samuel Cooper, Richard Cosway and William Ross, it highlights the skill required to create these remarkable miniatures.
