From Embroidery to Screen Printing

An exhibition of graphic works by students of the School of Form, Uniwersytet SWPS

inspired by 18th-century textiles from the Galeria Wettynów at Zamek Królewski w Warszawie

8–18 October 2026

2nd floor

Mythological scenes, fairy-tale narratives, luxuriant Rococo ornamentation... – the embroidered upholstery of historic furniture from the castle's Galeria Wettynów still delights with its craftsmanship and richness of narrative. This time it became the starting point for creative graphic reinterpretations by fourth-year students of the School of Form, Uniwersytet SWPS. We invite you to this exhibition, which continues the university's collaboration with Zamek Królewski, begun with the project “From Porcelain to Screen Printing”.

The works on display are the result of a half-year, intensive educational and design process. During study visits to the Castle, the young designers – supported by experts and guides – explored the history of 18th-century textiles, their social context, techniques of production and symbolism. They then carried out supporting projects in two areas: humanistic and graphic. After a series of trials, formal and colour tests, and experiments with collage, a cycle of 16 prints in a 50 × 70 cm format was created.

Each work is a contemporary, original interpretation of a historical pattern – not a literal reproduction, but an attempt to read anew a bygone language of symbols. All were made using screen printing (serigraphy). This choice is not accidental: in both embroidery and screen printing, the image is built from a point – a single stitch of thread or a raster dot from which light and shadow emerge.

The exhibition invites a dialogue between eras and prompts reflection on why 18th-century narratives still speak so strongly to contemporary sensibilities.
