Horror

Horror is booming. In movies, literature, and on stage, we encounter monsters and nightmares, violence and the grotesque, the uncanny and the disturbing. They reflect the anxieties of a present shaped by crisis and uncertainty. At the same time, horror draws us in: We are afraid, yet we cannot look away.

Drawing on the City of Vienna’s contemporary art collection, the exhibition explores this phenomenon. It shows how artists give form to fears and social crises, create new images of horror, and take up and transform familiar horror motifs. Horror: Dread and Desire explores the darker sides of our world and the fascination they hold for us.
