Invisible Synagogues

How to capture a building that no longer exists? Photographer Štěpán Bartoš has long been dedicated to documenting Jewish monuments, and in his unique project Vanished Synagogues, he seeks ways to make visible the places from which synagogues disappeared during the 20th century.

He inscribes the outlines of the vanished structures directly into the contemporary landscape in his photographs, thus creating an impressive visual layer between past and present.

The exhibition will present photographs of synagogues from Bohemia and Moravia that were destroyed during the Nazi occupation, in the post-war years, or under the communist regime. In addition to the images themselves, it will also offer reflections on the memory of the place, the significance of cultural heritage, and what remains of the vanished Jewish communities in the Czech landscape.
