The Whole World Walks on Fuhrmann's Carpets

The exhibition commemorates the fate of a Jewish family whose businesses at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries co-created the appearance of the Moravian Manchester, and whose products were part of everyday life far beyond the borders of Brno. The exhibition is freely accessible in the garden of the Löw-Beer Villa.

The founder of the company, Moriz Fuhrmann, built a prosperous business focused on the production of carpets, plushes, krimmers, and jerseys. His sons Hans and Heinrich continued the family tradition, but their lives and businesses were dramatically interrupted by the rise of Nazism. After the war, Moriz's grandson Robert Fuhrmann returned to Czechoslovakia and briefly re-established the family business, only for the family to lose it a second time after the communist coup. Robert's sister Dorothee, a native of Brno, after emigrating to Great Britain, became known as Dorrit Dekk, establishing herself as a distinctive graphic designer, illustrator, and poster artist, and becoming one of the remarkable personalities of European post-war design.
