Exhibition "The Legacy of the Bohemian Germans"

Muzeum Cheb, together with the Institute of Ethnology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, invites you to the exhibition "The Legacy of the Bohemian Germans in the Light of the Prague Collection of German Folk Songs," which opened on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 4:00 PM with a chamber vernissage. The exhibition is a new part of the museum's permanent exhibition and thematically follows the presentation of Cheb stones by Willi Russ.

LEGACY OF THE BOHEMIAN GERMANS (ONLINE)

The aim of the exhibition is to draw attention to the intangible cultural heritage of the Bohemian Germans, captured in the so-called Prague Collection of German Folk Songs, which was created between 1894 and 1945 thanks to the efforts of several generations of researchers. Among them are prominent figures of contemporary Cheb ethnography, such as the founder of the magazine "Unser Egerland," Alois John, and Dr. Michael Urban. The collection includes not only rich musical material but also documentation of other manifestations of German-speaking folk culture in the Czech lands.

Since 2024, Muzeum Cheb has been actively involved in the digitization and accessibility of this collection as a project partner implemented by the Institute of Ethnology of the CAS. The exhibition at Muzeum Cheb offers not only an insight into the history of the collection but primarily highlights the current results of the ongoing processing and digitization of this unique archival collection, which open new possibilities for understanding the cultural heritage of the Bohemian Germans.
