The exhibition invites you on a journey through Sweden – from Sápmi in the north to Stockholm in the south. Based on the Moderna Museet's collection, Kunstmuseum Brandts opens the door to the diverse expressions and pioneers of Swedish modernism.
In the first half of the 20th century, Sweden transformed from an agricultural society into a modern industrial nation. The period was marked by world war and despondency, but also by social changes and a belief in the future. The fear of war went hand in hand with social reforms and a belief in change.
The upheavals of the time are reflected in art. With impulses from Paris and Berlin, Swedish artists sought new expressions that could reflect the modern life of the time. Others looked inward, cultivating motifs that reflected a longing for what once was.
Throughout the exhibition, you will encounter works by six contemporary Swedish artists who bridge modernism and our time. The artists are Carola Grahn, Karin Mamma Andersson, Lena Cronqvist, Conny Karlsson Lundgren, Lap-See Lam, and Anna Bjerger.
The exhibition, which borrows its title from a 1934 summer motif by Ragnar Sandberg, takes place during a geopolitical time of upheaval. Today, as 100 years ago, there is war in Europe. The world is rapidly changing, and the Nordic countries and Europe are moving closer together. It can be difficult to see the solutions on the horizon – but perhaps art can help us on our way? We set course for Sweden.
The exhibition is created in collaboration with Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
