Exhibition IN THE DEPTHS OF THE MONASTERY

This bilingual panel exhibition presents the results of archaeological research conducted at the Dominican monastery and the Church of St. Wenceslaus in Opava. The research, carried out between 1967 and 1991 by the Slezské zemské muzeum under the direction of Dr. Vlasta Šikulová, took place during extensive reconstruction of the monastic complex. Although this is one of the most significant archaeological investigations in Opava, only findings from 1967 and 1969, along with analyses of glass and textile artifacts, have been processed in detail until now. Therefore, this exhibition for the first time comprehensively presents the results of this research, introducing visitors to selected finds that speak to the daily life, crafts, and material culture of medieval Opava. These include ceramic artifacts, glass artifacts, leather shoe components, wooden everyday objects, and also unique fragments of textiles as parts of the clothing of a burgher of medieval Opava, which are rather exceptionally found during archaeological research. It is precisely the abundance and quality of preservation of textile fragments that make the research from the monastery unique among findings from all of Opava.

The panel exhibition is a supplementary project to the exhibition "Dominikánský klášter v Opavě" at the Historická výstavní budova Slezského zemského muzea, which is open until October 31, 2026. The exhibition presents the history of the Dominican monastery and the Church of St. Wenceslaus and details the archaeological research carried out in the former monastic complex in 1969.
