GYPSIES. PORTRAIT OF THE ROMA FROM WITHIN. Artur Pawłowski
These are not just photographs. They are fleeting moments I caught in a black box. Light. Portraits. Glances. They say more than can be put into words. I met people who are sometimes sad and then, right after, laugh, play, dance and dream. They carry the memory of generations. My story is about human dignity, culture and identity seen through a lens that does not judge, but observes and respects. This is a message from the heart, about how the Roma live, think and feel. The photographs show mainly Carpathian Roma, but also people from central Poland who come to visit the graves of their loved ones at the Bródno cemetery. All of this belongs to a time of change that is now distant.
The photographs shown at the exhibition were taken in Poland at the turn of 1992 and 1993.
Artur Pawłowski
Kacper M. Krajewski, also a photojournalist, wrote about the photography of Artur Pawłowski:
„Artur is a photographer, which means a painter of light. Artur is a photojournalist, which means a man who can take a picture at the right moment. Artur is sometimes an artist, which means one who can dig out from everyday life the last scrap of reality.
ARTUR PAWŁOWSKI. Born 1961. Member of the Polish Association of Photographic Artists. He spent his childhood in the Targówek district of Warsaw. He studied drums at the J. Elsner Music School in Warsaw. He worked for the monthly Podróże; the weeklies Przekrój, Polityka, Wprost, Spotkania, Ozon, Financial Times; the Agencja Reporter and Forum agencies, and Życie Warszawy. From 2001 he collaborated with "National Geographic Polska". He was a laureate of the Polish Press Photography Contest in 1993, 1994 and 2001, and a juror in the Grand Press Photo contest in 2006–2010. A bachelor's thesis about Artur Pawłowski was written at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań in 2014.
