Senon Williams: Further/Farther

Showroom Berggasse 19 Opening: October 8, 2026, 7 pm October 9, 2026 - October 3, 2027

Senon Williams creates the site-specific installation, Further/Farther, exclusively for the Showroom Berggasse 19 at the Sigmund Freud Museum in Vienna. It is a monumental mural triptych that depicts individual and collective inner worlds. Through this piece, Williams explores the terrain of the human psyche, touching on themes of the fragility of existence, closeness and distance, dialogue and speechlessness.

Multiple large-format paintings merge into a single panorama. The tension-filled coexistence of abstract bodily and landscape forms creates a narrative that oscillates between hope and desolation. This narrative focuses on both the developmental potential of civilization and the human capacity for thought. Similar to Sigmund Freud's belief that unconscious states manifest in the visual language of dreams, Senon Williams connects visual and linguistic expression in his art to reveal the interplay between image and language at work in thought.

These works were made as part of the Freud Artist Residency, a bi-annual residency from the Jane McAdam Freud Estate, in partnership with The Sigmund Freud Museum, Vienna and the Freud Museum, London. Accordingly, the centerpiece of the installation is an oversized egg made of wire mesh sitting in an armchair. This piece, selected by Williams, is the work of artist Jane McAdam Freud ‘Forgotten Memory’ that seems to be observing and listening to its environment.
