The Adam Mickiewicz Museum of Literature in Warsaw invites you to the exhibition Maria Konopnicka. It presents the figure of the distinguished Polish writer of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The biography of the author of Rota, a poem that aspired to become the national anthem after Poland regained independence, still fascinates scholars and historians of literature. Adored and scorned during her lifetime, systematically removed from the school reading canon, she is sinking into deeper oblivion among readers. Yet she was the only woman, second only to Sienkiewicz, honoured on the occasion of her 25th jubilee of “literary work” with a “national gift”, namely the manor house in Żarnowiec, purchased with contributions from readers. She was also a “revolutionary” in children's literature. Her works were meant to entertain and encourage the youngest to read. Our exhibition tells all of this.
The exhibition was created as part of the Museum of Literature's participation in the European Cultural Heritage Route Kobiety Pisarki / Women Writers Route, certified on 1 June 2022 by the Institute of Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe.
