Jenna Sutela

Jenna Sutela creates “living sculptures” as well as audio and video works that explore open – relational, infinite – systems at the intersection of matter and meaning. Her artistic practice continues her long-standing engagement with parallel forms of perception, communication and intelligence, both human and otherwise.

Sutela often experiments with random elements or evolving structures. She searches for patterns and signs in what might generally be regarded as random or chaotic, and in doing so examines the role of media such as microscopes and telescopes in shaping our understanding of reality.

The work approaches scientific research not as static fact, but as a form of inquiry that is speculative, philosophical and socio-political. It returns again and again to certain themes: decentralized organization, the continuity between physical and informational processes, and an ecological understanding of existence as fundamentally interconnected – with one another and with a planet that is not ours.
