Exhibition "WOOD WICKER STRAW"

The exhibition of the Museum of South-East Moravia in Zlín, housed in the forester's lodge in front of Malenovice Castle, presents the domestic processing of the most accessible natural materials – wood, wicker and straw – as an important part of traditional folk culture. The exhibition shows not only finished products with their functional and aesthetic value, but also the body of skills through which rural craftsmen created from natural materials the objects necessary for sustaining life and developing existence. It documents production processes, which reveal the remarkable skill and ingenuity of the makers, arising from the natural harmony and firm bond between people and nature. Thanks to this, the objects produced were useful, durable and beautiful.

A separate section of the exhibition is devoted to wood carving and the traditional architecture of the region, in which wood and straw played a significant role. The work of important creators from the region is also presented. Part of the exhibition tour consists of video documentaries capturing traditional production processes.

One of the main authors of the exhibition is dr. Karel Pavlištík, ethnographer and folklorist, a long-standing member of the museum staff. He also created the publication WOOD WICKER STRAW for the exhibition, which can be ordered from us here.

Entry to the WOOD WICKER STRAW exhibition, as well as to the short-term exhibitions in the forester's lodge, is included in the admission ticket to Malenovice Castle.
