With the first comprehensive retrospective in Immendorff's adopted hometown of Düsseldorf, where he studied, taught, and worked for decades, the Kunstpalast brings him back into focus. Around 120 works from five decades trace his path from his beginnings at the Düsseldorf Art Academy to his last works created in his local studio.
The chronologically structured exhibition, supported by his estate, unites paintings, sculptures, drawings, and documentation of Immendorff's actions. Complementary archive and photographic material, sketches, writings, and press clippings convey a vivid picture of his broad understanding of art and his multifaceted view of the world.
Almost two decades after Immendorff's death, the retrospective at the Kunstpalast brings back into consciousness an artist who is as well-known as he is often misunderstood, and whose art-historical influence extended far beyond the Rhineland. The exhibition opens up access to the work of the Düsseldorf artist for a new generation and provides an opportunity to re-evaluate his current relevance.
