Collection Room. Out of the Corner of My Eye – an exhibition about how we photograph and how we look
Is photography a reliable record and an undeniable testimony to what was? Do we see the same thing when looking at the same thing? Such questions are raised by the new exhibition of the Gdańsk Gallery of Photography, which can be seen at the GGF and NOMUS – New Museum of Art at Jaracza 14 in Gdańsk.
The Collection Room is a series of presentations of selected works from the collections of the Gdańsk Gallery of Photography and the deposit of the Gdańsk Collection of Contemporary Art in the NOMUS – New Museum of Art department. The exhibition will feature works by artists associated with Pomerania, such as Bolesława and Edmund Zdanowscy, Stefan Figlarowicz, Marcel Grisard, Wiesław Gruszkowski, Roman Joachimowski, Krzysztof Kamiński, Henryk Radowicz, Dorota Walentynowicz, Mieczysław Witold Wątorski, but also from outside the Tri-City, such as Anna Kutera, Krystyna Łyczywek, Jiří Jahoda, and Jacqueline Livingston. The exhibition will be enriched with works by artists outside the museum collection – Rafał Kucharczuk, Rafał Placek, and Tomek Zerka, whose photographs show diverse ways of portraiture and the experimental potential of instant photography.
Alongside works by artists with established artistic achievements, there will also be photographs by unidentified authors. Their works can be classified as vernacular photography, i.e., utilitarian, everyday, created primarily for private purposes. The juxtaposition of works by amateurs (enthusiasts, passionate individuals) and professional artists reflects the richness and versatility of the photographic medium.
