Dziergamy Na Polu is an initiative of several Kraków knitters, founded in 2023. It grew from the idea of creating a local Kraków knitting community. The group aims to exchange experiences, build community, and initiate knitting and broader crafts projects, and to pass on knowledge and skills to new generations. We organise regular meetings where interested people can exchange ideas and share inspiration about colours, materials and future plans. We prepare and coordinate one-off meetings, themed – e.g. knitted cinema screenings or the celebration of World Knit in Public Day. Regarding the work and activities of DNP to date: since 2023 it has systematically developed and organised more and more events aimed at the crafting community, most of them open and free of charge. Every year the major event is World Knit in Public Day, accompanied by competitions with prizes and communal knitting. Since 2024 DNP has been a co-organiser of the Krakoskiego Yarnmarku, i.e. the Knitting Fair – the largest fair of this type in southern Poland. “Pod Dzierganym Niebem” is a project created 100% by hand by knitters who actively take part in the life and functioning of the group “krakowskie dziewiarki”. In 2025 we started a campaign that gathered a group of over 100 people, united by one goal: preparing crochet squares measuring 50 cm by 50 cm, which would allow a sun shade to be made, possibly on the streets of Kraków. We wanted to show that a community like ours can together create something that serves not only our community but society as a whole. We drew inspiration from the Spanish town of Alhaurín de la Torre, Málaga, where knitters together created a sun shade, lowering the temperature on the streets by 5 degrees Celsius. The project premiered during the 3rd edition of the Krakoskiego Yarnmarku 2026, where guests from all over Poland could admire the craftsmanship of fellow crocheters, and the installation in the tent let visitors rest under the colourful squares. Our wish is to provide this kind of solution in the future in our own neighbourhood, and to draw attention to climate change, to which we are not prepared, and to conditions that are becoming increasingly dangerous for our health. We hope our work will signal these processes and inspire preventive action.
