View of the Krakowianki – Tola Certowicz

By Patrycja Chelbus-Grudzień

Oct 14, 2026 – Jan 3, 2027

We invite you to another presentation in the series “View of the Krakowianki”. This time, at the exhibition “Kraków from the Beginning, Without End”, we will meet sculptor Tola Certowicz.

October is the month when students arrive in Kraków to begin their studies. They walk the same streets once walked by Tola Certowicz more than a hundred years ago. Much separates her from today's students: she lived in a completely different era, when it was far harder for women to obtain an education and develop artistic ambitions. Tola was one of the first women to clear the way for the generations of women artists who followed.

In letters written from Kraków, we discover the perspective of a young woman beginning a new life in the city. Tola shares her daily life, longs for her loved ones, forms friendships, wonders what her studies at the Adrian Baraniecki Higher Courses for Women will be like, enjoys buying books and learning to draw, feels uneasy about social gatherings, and plans her days. From these seemingly ordinary notes emerges a story about a young person who discovers not only Kraków, but also her own passion and artistic path.

Opening hours: Exhibition available during the opening hours of the permanent exhibition at Krzysztofory Palace
