Historical letters from the Postal Museum NTM collection

On the occasion of World Letter Writing Day, which falls on September 1, the Postal Museum NTM has prepared a chamber exhibition of historically significant letters from its collections.

The presentation is located in two safe display cases in the Postal Museum NTM in Prague in Vávra's Mill. It recalls a time when a letter was not only a means of communication, but also a personal testimony of its time.

Visitors can encounter letters from monarchs, statesmen, and other prominent figures that illustrate their daily lives, relationships, and important historical events. Among the most valuable exhibits is a cabinet letter from Maria Theresa from 1772, with a black mourning border, in which the empress congratulates the abbot of the Břevnov-Broumov monastery on his fiftieth anniversary of priestly ordination. An exceptional testimony to the dramatic era of the Napoleonic Wars is also the personal letter of Emperor Joseph I from 1709, addressed to his brother and commander-in-chief of the Austrian army.

The small exhibition shows that letters are not just historical documents. They capture emotions, relationships, decisions, and moments that shaped history. In the age of emails, SMS, and social networks, they also remind us of the value of personal communication, handwriting, and time dedicated to another person.
