Interiors

19th and 20th-century

Between 1870 and 1876, on the initiative of Prince Hans Heinrich XI von Pless, Pszczyna Castle was rebuilt in the French Baroque style, and its interiors were furnished richly and lavishly.

In November 1876 the Leipzig newspaper „Illustrierte Zeitung” reported that „the princely seat had become one of the most beautiful in all of Silesia”.

Hans Heinrich XI was succeeded by his son, Hans Heinrich XV, who, together with his English wife Daisy, renowned for her beauty, maintained a grand lifestyle at the court in Pszczyna, spending freely on changes to the decor of the magnate residence.

Bernhard von Bülow, German prince and politician, not without reason remarked that „the castle in Pszczyna was furnished with Byzantine splendour”. The opulence of the Pszczyna residence also left its mark on Wojciech Kossak, Polish history and battle painter, who stayed at the castle during the First World War. In his memoirs he noted: „the chambers are vast, and even the guest rooms are furnished with extraordinary splendour”.

The interiors of Pszczyna Castle, whose architectural decoration and furnishings date from the last thirty years of the 19th century and the first two decades of the 20th century, survived the upheaval of two world wars and the communist era in an almost unchanged state. Crystal mirrors and chandeliers, wooden wainscoting and parquet floors, stucco work, marble fireplaces, furniture, porcelain, portraits of ancestors, mementos – the list could go on and on.

A visit to the exhibition „Interiors of the 19th and 20th Century” is like a journey through time – along the way you can see representative rooms such as the grand staircase, the library, the great salon and the dining room, the private apartments of the princely couple, and the guest apartments, including the apartment intended for the German emperor.
