COMMON STORY uses historical and contemporary posters to explore the history of exhibitions and programs at the Künstlerhaus Vereinigung since its founding in 1861. At the same time, the exhibition looks to the future of the institution.
The selected posters offer a programmatic cross-section through the more than 160-year history of the association and the building. The focus is on periodic and international exhibitions, as well as the Künstlerhaus as a place of networking. The significance of the poster as a medium of propaganda is also highlighted.
At the same time, the poster becomes visible as an independent art object. As a creative testimony, it documents developments from Art Nouveau to contemporary art. As a medium that connects information, design, and public space, the exhibition poster is also a projection surface for social, aesthetic, and political currents. COMMON STORY makes the evolution of visual culture over more than a century comprehensible.
Today, the Künstlerhaus sees itself as an open house – for existing and new members as well as for a diverse audience. It is a place for encounters, participation, and exchange, for collaborative creation and involvement. Within the framework of an interactive educational program, visitors are invited to actively engage with the history of the house and co-create the exhibition.
