Arena Wien

The Arena occupation fifty years ago is regarded in Vienna’s history as a belated yet undeniably lasting 1968-style event. Although the site of the former foreign slaughterhouse was eventually cleared and leveled, part of the former domestic slaughterhouse became home to the alternative scene—a place that has remained an exceptionally vibrant meeting point and cultural venue to this day.

The exhibition looks behind the scenes of a cultural institution that is shaped, on the one hand, by a self-image rooted in resistance, and that, on the other, has positioned itself as a professional concert promoter within the global entertainment business.
