Zlatka and Hanuš Lamrovi: We’re in the Garden

We go to visit our friends and find a sign on the gate: “We’re in the garden.” There’s no point in ringing the doorbell. We enter carefully, looking around for the bush, bed or hidden corner where we’ll discover the pair of them. We can’t see them yet, they’re probably crouched down, busy doing something… are they even here at all?

Zlata Lamrová is known for her embroidered textiles, which evoke the growth and proliferation of plants. The size of the stitches and the speed with which she works change from piece to piece. As a result, it often seems that the embroidery has grown on the material, or is climbing still further. Her husband, Hanuš Lamr, is a renowned jeweller who has even designed pieces for the First Lady of the Czech Republic. His sculptural jewellery is based on the study of plants and natural elements. Distinct renderings of fruit, flowers and tendrils appear in unexpected contexts.

Both artists are inspired by nature, more precisely by a specific garden in Potštejn, where Hanuš’s father, the painter Aleš Lamr, also worked. Hanuš and Zlata Lamrovi bring that garden’s essence to the gallery’s concrete silo in an installation with audiovisual elements. The small exhibition space immerses visitors in a rich microworld, born of a willingness to discover small paradises in green corners just around the bend.
