Gočár Gallery
Gočár Gallery, known as the East Bohemian Gallery in Pardubice until 2022, was founded in 1953, when a network of state galleries was established across Czechoslovakia. Launching its activities in 1954, the gallery was first based in the service spaces of the Pardubice Castle, which it initially shared with the Regional Museum. Its first exhibitions were mounted here, and it also received touring exhibitions. Significant exhibition activities also took place at branches in Chrudim, Vysoké Mýto and Litomyšl, which became independent organisations in 1960. The end of the 1950s brought major changes to the gallery. In 1959, it merged with the Museum and Regional Heritage Institute to form a single colossal institution: the Regional Museum and Heritage Institute. An organisation with such a wide remit proved unwieldy, and from the next year the gallery operated only in association with the Museum, as the Museum and Gallery in Pardubice. Since 2023, the Gočár Gallery has been based in the heritage-protected building of the former Winternitz Automatic Mills, built to a design by Josef Gočár. The building’s current appearance is the result of an extensive renovation designed by the architect Petr Všetečka and implemented by the gallery’s establishing body, the Pardubice Region, from 2018 to 2022. It houses both the repositories, where the art collection is stored, and exhibition spaces.
