Jaroslav Král — Písek Returns

An exhibition of drawings and paintings by Jaroslav Král (1883–1942), compiled from the collections of the Prácheňské muzeum and private loans, reflects the artist's relationship with Písek. The painter's family lived here for eleven years from 1905. At that time, Jaroslav Král, studying at the Academy of Fine Arts under Vojtěch Hynais in Prague, frequently visited Písek. In addition to his parents, sister, and brother, the artist also had an uncle in Písek, MUDr. Václav Šťastný, the founder and chief physician of the Písek hospital.

The painter received prestigious commissions here, portraying the poet Adolf Heyduk with his wife, Prince Bedřich Schwarzenberg, the first chairman of the board of directors of the District Hospital in Písek. Engineer Jan Kodl, an international company of students who attended Otakar Ševčík's violin school, Mikoláš Aleš, a native of nearby Mirotice, and others appear in Jaroslav Král's caricatures. Several paintings depicting views of the city and the river have also been preserved in the estate of the artist, who was tortured to death in Auschwitz. The personality of MUDr. Václav Šťastný will also be commemorated in the exhibition through documents.
