BONES

Oct 25, 2024 – Dec 31, 2026

Exhibition of Bones

The exhibition presents mainly the outcome of the collecting work of the Natural History Department of Muzeum Tatrzańskiego im. Dra Tytusa Chałubińskiego w Zakopanem over the last few years. It also shows individual historic objects dating from the late 19th and early 20th century. The curator's main aim is to highlight the diversity of skeletal structures in vertebrates and to selectively show connections between their anatomy and the way organisms live.

Bones, together with teeth, are among the hardest elements in the bodies of mammals and birds. That is precisely why they preserve so well in sediments and, thanks to fossilization, can survive even tens of millions of years. Bones record information about size, mass, the way of moving, and even the age and sex of the organism we are dealing with. Based on similarities in skeletal structure, we also trace mutual kinship and read evolutionary changes.

Curator Marcin Warchałowski,

Head of the Natural History Department of Muzeum Tatrzańskiego im. Dra Tytusa Chałubińskiego w Zakopanem

The exhibition can be viewed at Centrum Promocji i Ochrony Torfowisk w Chochołowie (Chochołów 40).
