Wiesław Stanisławski. In the Circle of Illusions (sketch for a portrait of a Tatra mountaineer)

The exhibition presents the figure of Wiesław Stanisławski (1909-1933), one of the best Tatra climbers of his time. Stanisławski's process of becoming a true Tatra mountaineer lasted three years, from 1925 to 1927. It began with his first contact with the Tatras, then his first roping up with a partner, his first climbs on the rock and his choice of routes. Its culmination was the years 1928-1933, five seasons in which Stanisławski became one of the best mountaineers of his generation and overcame the greatest faces of the Tatras in an impressive style. Its consequence was the further development of his passion for the mountains and his climbing skills, right up to his tragic death. The whole story spans eight years of his life in the Tatras.

The exhibition will show some previously unknown photographs of Stanisławski, family and climbing photographs, mountain notes and more.

Curator: Wojciech Szatkowski

The exhibition can be viewed from 16 May to 31 October 2026 at the Muzeum Taternictwa i Narciarstwa (museum under construction), Plac Niepodległości 6.
