Natural History Museum Vienna

The Natural History Museum Vienna is one of Austria's largest museums and non-university research institutions, caring for some 30 million objects from zoology, botany, mineralogy, anthropology and prehistory. Its Neo-Renaissance building on Maria-Theresien-Platz was designed by Gottfried Semper and Carl Hasenauer, built from 1871 and opened by Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1889 as part of the never-completed Kaiserforum. Thirty-nine halls show over 100,000 objects; the museum also runs the Pathological-Anatomical Collection in the Narrenturm.
